The Lansdowne

The Strand, Calne SN11 0EH, UK – 01249 812488

This was the second time that I’ve visited the restaurant with my wife and I wasn’t disappointed - a short but great menu that’s reasonably priced. The food was excellent and as a local why would I want to travel anywhere else!?

Loverly front of house, half way through refurbishment so half the rooms are of a 3 star standard and the other half 4/5 star standard. Really pleasant and helpful staff and pets allowed front of house in the evening, with a water bowl provided. Large party room bookings may need to source external parking arrangements as only spaces available for 5 cars max on site at present. Well cooked breakfast to send you on your way in the morning.

Calne Bed and Breakfast

Most comfortable room - no traffic noise whatsoever and a comfortable bed and excellent shower. Free wi-fi. In-room fridge to keep your fresh milk fresh and the fully organic breakfast was generous in portion size and absolutely delicious! Don't be put off by the unassuming exterior - the room is generous in size and very comfortable and the owner is great fun to chat too.

It was OK, though more suited to Air BnB than a hotel site

White Hart Hotel

If you liked Faulty Towers this is the place for you. Comfortable with good food. Warm welcome.

Thoroughly enjoyable stay although it may not be to everyone's taste. If you want character and history, this is the place. Excellent restaurant with well cooked and presented dishes. Best baked camembert I've had to date and sirloin steak that's actually medium rare, as requested. Very nice full English breakfast. Good selection of local ales and various lagers etc. Staff are friendly and cheerful, the place exudes character. Loved it and will revisit. Local area is very picturesque with a host of places to visit. Something for everyone.

Dumb Post Inn

Dumb Post Hill, Bremhill, Calne SN11 9JZ, UK – 01249 813192

Quality of food was great, if a little on the pricey side (meals of similar quality to be had for less in the area in similarly quaint surroundings). The recent renovations have opened up the place and give it a very airy feel. My main concern is the lack of proactivity in service. On arriving for lunch as a walk in we were informed they couldn't take walk-ins and we needed to have booked, she then walked away. All but two tables were empty. Only one marked as reserved. I pulled out my phone and booked online and returned shortly after to four tables occupied. If instead a small explanation was offered (you could even lie) "we're short staffed", "we have a large booking", then offer to take a reservation and point the way to the bar, you'd have a happier customer who might well spend more money and be more likely to come back and recommend the place. It'd taken a minute and changed the experience and would improve the bottom line.

Great food, desserts were fab, excellent selection of gins. Best to book here.

The Black Dog Inn

New Rd, Calne SN11 9LX, UK – 01249 813911

Found this place and wow what a nice surprise! Very friendly and helpful staff. I had the black dog burger which was really good. Definitely recommend!! Next time I'll get the steak

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

Heritage

Kerry Crescent, 1 New Rd, Calne SN11 0JH, UK – 07770 770004

Arrive as a guest and leave as a friend. A beautifully restored heritage home where Elle and Jillian have thought of everything to make your stay special, from scones, cream and jam on arrival, to home made mead made with honey from their own hives. Spoils you for all other B&Bs.

Beautiful and comfortable B&B. I stayed in the Gothic Room on my 2 day visit, and the bed was very comfortable. Has a TV, tea and coffee making facilities and very good Wi-Fi. The breakfasts were delicious and nothing was too much trouble for Ellie who cooked the breakfasts. I particularly loved the sausages which were made from their very own pigs!!! Both Ellie and Gillian really do go that extra mile to make you feel at home and the house is decorated to a really high standard. Will definitely stay again next time I'm in Wiltshire.

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!

Spent thr night camping. Our first time on our own and with a new tent. Despite it raining most if the weekend was very impressed with the facilities. Showers, washing up laundry, children's playground all immaculate. Loved the nature trail around the site too. Very quiet site and even reasonably priced well equipped shop. Thank you!

Probably really great if you have kids or fancy fishing. We stayed for one night and broke the rules as the pitch we were designated was right in between 2 other groups already pitched up, with loads of extra space. We chose the extra space, so perhaps they could consider peoples space when designating their pitches. Really clean and manicured. The shower felt like I was being water boarded so not such a relaxing shower, with not a lot of room, hemmed into a cubicle, considering the space they could use for a nice big wet room or something. Also I had to perform some thigh strengthening move when blow drring my hair as the mirrors are so low. However, the girl who served us was lovely and it looked like a nice place. Only stayed for one night ... when they don't serve food at the nearest pub. A taxi into town and a slap up curry soon sorted that! :)
